While dictating can seem simple, it may be daunting to start dictating using Dragon Medical One (DMO), while also trying to memorise all the voice commands and best dictation practices.
Login to Dragon Medical One
- Launch the Dragon Medical One application on your workstation.
- Enter your username if this is your first time opening the application, otherwise it should remember you in the User drop-down.
- Select the appropriate microphone from the available drop-down list.
- Choose the Language and Specialty. By default these are English (Australia) and General Medicine, respectively.
- Click OK to login and launch the DragonBar.
Dictate with Dragon Medical One
Once you have logged in successfully, you will see the DragonBar appear on your screen. See our article on the DragonBar for more information on the available features.
To begin dictating, click the talk button on your external microphone or click the microphone icon on the DragonBar. If the DragonBar microphone is not green, Dragon will not be able to hear you.
Position your cursor where you would like your dictated text to appear.
If you start dictating and your text instead appears in the Dictation Box underneath the DragonBar, this simply means that Dragon does not fully recognise or support the application in which you have placed your cursor.
You can dictate as normal within the Dictation Box. Once you are happy with your transcription, place your cursor in the appropriate place in your application and say "transfer text". This will transfer all text from the Dictation Box directly into your application.
Useful punctuation
To save yourself time, we recommend dictating with punctuation. This may sound odd when spoken aloud but will help you immensely.

Correct your dictation
You can use your voice to navigate, select and update information in your dictation.
When saying commands remember to pause briefly between your voice command and the next dictated text.
If you are making corrections to your dictation as you go, you can continue with your dictation by saying "go to end of paragraph/sentence", then start dictating once again.
For a more detailed list of commands you can use to navigate and make corrections to your dictation, say "what can I say".
