Update March 2022
Since our Monterey update last year we have made the decision to decouple Medicare Web Services (MWS) from our 64-bit Genie release. You can now update your Genie to v9.4.6 or above to connect your practice with MWS. Now that we have delivered on Medicare Web Services before the 13 March 2022 cut-off date, our Genie developers will be working on completing our 64-bit application as the highest priority. Please follow our 64-bit Community post for the latest updates.
Monterey Update 1 November 2021
Apple have now released their latest macOS version 12.0 Monterey on 26 October 2021 AEST.
Similar to their Catalina and Big Sur releases, this operating system will not support 32-bit applications, and as such, all current versions of Genie will not run.
Our developers are currently still working on delivering a 64-bit version of Genie before the end of the calendar year. We will initially only be releasing this as a beta release, which we are intending to release before the Christmas break. This is to ensure we are confident in providing a stable and functioning version to the majority of customers that need to update for Medicare Webservices before 13 March 2022.
At this moment in time we have successfully updated our test Genie environment to 4D v19 (64-bit compatible) and have passed notice of integration with Medicare Web Services. We are currently finalising development in a few key areas and will be performing testing to resolve any potential bugs that may have arisen in the platform upgrade from v17 (Genie 9.4) to v19 (Genie 64-bit).
Big Sur Update 13 November 2020
Apple have released their latest macOS version 11.0 Big Sur at 10am PT 12 November 2020 (4am AEST 13 November 2020).
Big Sur operating systems will not support 32-bit applications and as such, Genie will be inoperable on both macOS 10.15 Catalina and macOS 11.0 Big Sur until we are fully 64-bit compatible.
We remain committed to providing a 64-bit version of Genie before Apple ceases support for macOS 10.14 Mojave.
Big Sur is also transitioning away from Intel chips toward Apple-built ARM processors, and while we believe the transition should be relatively simple, we will be unable to confirm a 64-bit Genie will run on these new processors until we have completed 64-bit development. Please keep an eye on our 64-bit Genie Compatibility Updates on our Community to monitor our progress.
Catalina Original Update 8 October 2019
The last Mac operating system, macOS 10.15 Catalina, was released on 8 October 2019. We have identified that Genie software will not run on the new macOS Catalina release.
The macOS Catalina release has removed support for 32bit applications, which includes all current versions of Genie. As such, we will need to rewrite an immense amount of underlying code in Genie to make it a 64bit application. We have been working through this task for over a year prior to Catalina's release and will continue to do so. Until this coding has been completed Genie will not run at all on this operating system.
We are committed to delivering on this updated 64 bit application before Apple ceases support for macOS 10.14 Mojave. Beyond this deadline, we do not currently have a concrete ETA for a 64-bit version of Genie. To stay abreast of our progress toward a 64-bit release, please follow our 64bit Genie Compatibility Updates community post, which provides transparency and detail around the the work still remaining for our developers.
What are your options?
In the interim, if delaying an upgrade to macOS Catalina is not an option, we have tested virtualisation using Parallels and have found this to be a viable option. Parallels will allow you to run macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier on your macOS 10.15 Catalina machine meaning you can maintain your Mac experience. You will need to seek the assistance of your IT Support to explore this or other options they deem suitable for you.
We have briefed our certified IT Advisers via a webinar, which has been recorded and will be available for all companies to be able to access this important information. For more information, please see our Running Genie in Parallels for macOS Catalina article.
Disable automatic updates
Until you’ve spoken to your IT Support, we strongly suggest you disable all automatic updates via your Macintosh System Preferences to ensure your machine does not automatically update to this version.
We will continue to update our customers as we progress with the development of a 64 bit application.
