The National Prescription and Dispense Repository (NPDR) allows providers and pharmacists to create and maintain medication histories for patients who have a My Health Record. Genie makes it easy to use this by integrating the functionality into your everyday processes.
Before you begin
Before you begin using the NPDR you must meet the pre-requisites as per the below section.
The following criteria must be met in order to add information to the NPDR:
- The practice and provider must have completed all steps required to record their respective HPI-O and HPI-I numbers. Please refer to the Configuring My Health Record article for further information.
- The practice and provider must be registered and configured for eRX.
- The patient must have applied and registered for their My Health Record.
- The following five required fields must be completed in the patient’s demographic window:
- Full address (including country)
- Date of birth
- Medicare number
- Medicare expiry date
- Patient IHI number
- The patient must have given consent for each individual medication to be uploaded to the NPDR.
- The provider must have the Retrieve Medicare Overview when opening My Health Record tab preference ticked in their User Preferences.
Open the patient’s Clinical window. You will notice that a new NPDR column has been added to the prescription list in the Clinical window.
Whether the scripts are ticked in this column will depend on whether you have access to the patient’s My Health Record. If the colour-coded indicator is green, you will already have access to the patient’s My Health Record. If it is any colour other than green, refer to the Viewing My Health Record article for information on how to gain access.
Once you have access, the scripts will be ticked. This means that, if the patient has an NPDR, the prescriptions will be sent to the NPDR by default.
If the patient does not have a My Health Record, or it is not advertised, the checkbox will be unticked. Unticked NPDR checkboxes against a prescription also indicate that a patient has not given consent for these prescriptions to be transmitted to the NPDR.
Note: Every time Genie checks that the patient’s My Health Record is accessible, it will tick and untick these checkboxes depending on the status of the patient’s health record.
Consent for Information Sent to a My Health Record
It is the responsibility of the doctor to comply with such requests from the patient.
The consent for the prescription record is initiated once Genie verifies the patient’s My Health Record. This consent status can be changed during the Adding to the NPDR process, as outlined below.
After configuring the NPDR for use, you can send patient prescriptions to the NPDR by following these steps:
- Click on the blue plus icon
above the prescription list and add the prescription(s) as normal
- Untick the checkbox in the NPDR column beside the prescriptions, if any, the patients want omitted from their My Health Record
- Click the Printer icon
to print the prescription(s) and transmit them to both eRx and the NPDR
When printing, Genie will show a ‘Communicating with eRx…’ alert. Once the transmission to eRx is complete, eRx will then forward the prescription(s) to the patient’s My Health Record. No further action on the user’s part is required.
Prescriptions & Dispense View (NPDR Documents Only)
In the My Health Record Views area, change the View Type to Prescription & Dispense and enter a date range. Click the Get View button, and Genie will briefly show a message that says “Retrieving Patient’s Prescription & Dispense View…”
Once the information has been retrieved, the viewing pane will populate with the patient’s National Prescription and Dispense Repository (NPDR) records in CDA format.
Hovering over a prescription will highlight it in red and clicking the prescription will expand it to show all records (within the specified date range) related to that prescription.
