Did you know that one of Genie's most versatile and helpful buttons is on your own keyboard? On a Windows keyboard it's the Alt key, and on a Mac keyboard it's the Option key.
Depending on where you are in Genie and what you're trying to do, holding the Alt/Option key provides you with extra functions and options. Read on below to learn some tips and tricks on how to use this key (we'll just say 'the Alt key' to simplify things) throughout the different areas of Genie.
Open the Genie Manual
Hold the Alt key and click the icon to the left of your Appointment Book. Genie will open the web-based version of the Genie Manual in your default browser.
Condense the appointment book
Hold the Alt key and click the heading of the Times column to hide all empty appointment slots and view any double bookings side-by-side.
Print the appointment book as an image
Hold the Alt key when clicking the printer icon to save a copy of the appointment book as an image - useful for quickly emailing a copy of the appointment book.
Search for appointments by duration
When using the Next... menu or the Find Again button to search for available appointments, hold the Alt key and Genie will allow you to specify the duration necessary for the appointment, allowing you to ensure there is enough time available for the patient.
Open a user's preferences
Hold the Alt key and click a user's tab at the top of the appointment book to open that person's User Preferences window. This will only work if you are not currently on that user's tab. Holding the Alt key and selecting the All tab will open All User Preferences.
Proportionally auto-fill
When receipting, hold down the Alt key and click on the Auto-Fill button to distribute the funds proportionally across all the items. This is useful when the patient has yet to pay their gap and you want to leave a balance on each item to accommodate this.
Reset the deposit receipt message
In Billing > List Deposits, you can set the receipt message back to the default message by holding the Alt key and clicking the Edit Receipt Message button.
Quick-print billing items
If you have a list of billing items (Open > Billing Items) you'd like to print off, exactly as they appear in the window, you can Alt + click the printer icon to print the list as-is. Note: This will print all items currently shown in the list; use the search
icon or Records > Search/Use Selected to limit your selection before printing.
Advanced checking for remittances
In the ECLIPSE window, you may sometimes need to backdate your search when retrieving older remittance advices for your claims. You can do this by holding the Alt key and clicking the Get Remittance Advices button. This will produce a window allowing you to set a 30-day date range to check for old remittances.
Maintain capitalisation
To prevent Genie from auto-capitalising names like 'Macdonald' (i.e. if the patient does not spell it with a capital D), hold the Alt key when clicking elsewhere in the Edit Patient (Demographic) window after typing it in.
Clear the Usual GP field
Hold the Alt key and click the Select... button next to the Usual GP field to remove the provider currently selected as the patient's Usual GP.
Interstate WorkCover certificates
When clicking the blue plus icon to add a new WorkCover certificate, you can hold the Alt key to select a different state's certificate. This is useful any time you need to manage a WorkCover claim for an accident or injury that occurred in another state.
Open attachments outside of Genie
Holding the Alt key and double-clicking the paperclip icon on an attachment will open the file in its default application outside of Genie. This is especially useful for users who need to review scans or images on a second screen while still using Genie. Note: This can also be done by Alt + clicking on the Image Browser
icon to open the Attachments window, or by right-clicking the attachment, holding Alt, and selecting Open.
View patient's appointment history
Under the Main/Summary tab of a patient's clinical record, you'll find a Next Appt field, showing the patient's upcoming appointment, if any. Holding Alt and double-clicking this field will produce a window that shows a list of all appointments, both past and future, for the patient (so long as the past appointments still exist in the appointment book).
Add letterhead to the Operation Record
Hold the Alt key when highlighting a procedure record in the patient's clinical window, and Genie will add the letterhead to the Operation Record (the op report). If more than one letterhead exists, a window will appear allowing you to select the letterhead you need.
Restore recently-deleted consults
If a consult record has just been deleted in error, hold the Alt key and click the trash can icon above the contacts list in the Clinical window. The deleted consult record will be restored, and will be automatically annotated to reflect the deletion and restoration. Please note: This will only work if the consult has not been created on the same day you are trying to restore it.
Accessing the QuickList feature (Prescribing)
When clicking the blue plus icon to add a new script to a patient's record, you can hold the Alt key to open the QuickList window. This window allows you to enter the name of a medication and immediately prescribe it with a single click.
Select all scripts
In the prescribing area of a patient's clinical window, you can hold the Alt key and click the printer icon to tick the Print box for all of the patient's scripts in the list. This saves you from having to tick each box manually if you need to reprint the patient's scripts all at once.
One of the broadest uses of the Alt key is the ability to delete items from certain drop-down menus throughout Genie, specifically, those menus that you can add to yourself. As an example, one of these menus is the Template drop-down menu when writing a Referral Reply letter.
In this example, we're deleting the Pt Did Not Arrive template by holding the Alt key and simply clicking on the name of the template. The menu will close, and when you reopen it the selected template will no longer be shown in the menu.
Please note: As you might have guessed, it can be very easy to delete the wrong entry by mistake when using this function - use caution!
This function works on menus in windows throughout Genie including, but not limited to:
- The Demographic window (Referral Source, Faculty, and Graduate Status)
- The Clinical window (Current Problems,Allergies, Past History, QuickScript, and more)
- The Procedure window (Procedure, Indication, Category, and more)
- The Letter window (Template, Type)
- The Radiology and Pathology Request windows (Reason, Provider, Sets, and more)
- And many more!
