SafeScript is a real time prescription monitoring system (RTPM) that alerts clinicians whenever a high-risk medication is being prescribed to a patient. This enabled clinicians to make safer decisions when prescribing monitored medicines in Genie.
All registered practitioners can check SafeScript through a secure web portal at www.safescript.vic.gov.au. This portal can also be accessed when you hand write prescriptions.
Note for specialists: If you do not prescribe monitored medicines frequently, the SafeScript portal may provide adequate access. Alternatively, you can integrate the SafeScript VIC notification app into your workflow by completing the following steps.
Setting up SafeScript for use through Genie
Step 1
Check if you have a bar code printed on your prescriptions. If not, ensure you are registered with either eRx, who can be contacted at 1300 700 921, or MediSecure, who can be contacted at 1800 47 27 47. This software can be installed within both Windows and Mac environments, and the eRx and MediSecure support teams can assist you with installing the software to either operating system.
Please note there is no additional cost associated with eRx, MediSecure and SafeScript services.
Step 2
Ensure your practice is running Genie v9.1.1 or above. Please use our Genie Updates article to update to v9.1.1, or our Updating Genie article to update to the latest Genie version.
Step 3
Ensure all prescribers in the practice have registered for SafeScript so they have access to the system.
Step 4
Ensure your Practice Manager or IT Administrator has arranged to install the SafeScript Notification App on each of the computers used for prescribing. The SafeScript Notification App is available at the health.vic website.
